Some of the Best Times to Visit Belize: March, April & May

Undeniably, there is no “bad time” to visit Belize. Luckily, we are blessed with summerlike weather year round where there is always something to do and see in Belize!

Unlike most other parts of the world, Belize only has two seasons – wet and dry. Our “dry” season is our peak season for visitors who come looking to escape a bleak and dreary Northern winter. Dry season begins in late November (around Thanksgiving) and ends in May. Within our dry season, however, there are three months that are especially the warmest and driest of them all – March, April, and May. That means these months are prime months for all aquatic activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, diving, snorkeling, fishing and so much more!

Best-Time-To-Visit-Belize

Winter in your part of the world vs. “Winter” in Belize!

March truly starts off the dry season by inviting strong cool breezes and especially warm sunny days. These pristine conditions are ideal for taking a sunset cruise along the Caribbean Sea or enjoying the complimentary use of our hobie cats as the wind guides your sails. With so much wind, Belizeans also break out their kite building skills, as they create colorful creations that cruise the open blue skies.

April brings clearer skies and warmer days making it the best month for diving and snorkeling fanatics alike. For divers, the greatest adventure of all is diving with whalesharks; these majestic creatures can be seen around the full moons of April and May. Belizeans also get ready to celebrate one of the biggest holidays in Belize, Easter, where traditions remain strong and the fun continues.

There is no need to wait until June for a summer vacation, when May begins and ends with the utmost perfect summer conditions. Now that Coco Plum has extended the “low season” rates to start as early as May 1, 2017 rather than later in June, you can begin to book that summer vacay today! Check out our May Special – don’t wait because availability is already limited!

Summer vacation deals at Coco Plum starting as early as May!

The wet season brings short bursts of rain usually in the early mornings and late nights, creating cooler temperatures that Belizeans wait for all year. In addition, this time of the year usually means lower hotel rates throughout Belize. The start of the low season towards the end of May and June mark the time of the year where many tropical foods come into season such as mango, conch, and lobster. Don’t forget to join us at Coco Plum for our second annual Lobster Festival where guests can spend the day hunting for lobster in the Caribbean Sea and return to a feast of lobster delicacies, live music, and fun & games all at no extra cost!

Trust us when we say there is no better way to celebrate your love than with a blissfully romantic cruise. Watch the Belizean sunset while enjoying an outstanding array of fresh tropical fruit, cheese, and of course – wine! The best part about our sunset cruise is that it is totally private – just you and your honey (and our experienced boat captain) will take in the expansive views as the sun sinks into the horizon of the Maya Mountains.

Belize is off to an Exciting Start in 2017!

Recently named as the 6th “Best Value” destination by Lonely Planet in 2017, Belize is every traveler’s paradise.

In the recent Best in Travel 2017 publication, Lonely Planet boasts about the unique paradox that is Belize complete with diving, snorkeling, and fishing along the Caribbean Sea and exotic wildlife waiting to be uncovered in the pristine jungle rainforest. Geographically, Belize is a nation located in the northern part of Central America and bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the east; this makes Belize an unmatched country that is recognized as both a Central American and Caribbean nation. Here, you can find a distinct blend of cultures ranging from Mestizo, Creole, Mayan, Mennonite, Garifuna, and a mix of all the above! All cultures have their own language, but since Belize was once a British colony, English is the official language making it easy for travelers to navigate our beautiful country.

lonely-planet-best-in-travel-2017-belize

In addition, Lonely Planet points out that along with Belize’s unique location is its small size. Belize actually has the same landmass as the state of Massachusetts, but with a population of only about 375,000 residents. When traveling to Belize, we encourage travelers to keep and open mind and seek out as many locals as possible. Belizeans are regarded as some of the friendliest people in the world and are more than happy to share parts of their culture and history with tourists. Coco Plum Island Resort is a locally owned and managed resort. Many of our staff members have been with us for years and are proud to show off the Best of Belize. There’s a reason we were named the #2 Best Hotel for Service in Belize!

Best of Belize at Coco Plum Island Resort!

So, now that you’ve learned a bit more about Belize, the next question you’re asking yourself is …

How can I get to Belize?

And there’s more exciting news for Belize in the start of this New Year! 2017 has also brought about new, direct flights from major U.S. cities. Southwest Airlines just announced direct flights from Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) to Belize (BZE). This flight service will commence on June 4th, 2017. This route will also connect eastern U.S. cities such as Baltimore, New York, Washington D.C. Atlanta, Tampa, & Orlando so it will be even easier to get to Belize! Southwest also offers other direct flights to Belize through Houston (Hobby) and limited service flights through Denver (DEN) which will be extended for Summer 2017.

Javier and Christina's Belize Beach Wedding
Image

A Magical Caribbean Beach Wedding

Congratulations Javier & Christina

Wanderlust: a strong desire to travel. As a young man, he sailed pass a quaint little island paradise in the southern Caribbean waters of Belize. What he stumbled upon was truly a dream come true. Met by forever smiling, warm and friendly staff he was generously welcomed and fed. He was hooked. The views from every angle of this little hidden treasure were unbelievable. He vowed to return soon. And he would return to marry the love of his life at his most favorite place in these Caribbean waters.

Coco Plum Island Resort is not only a great all-inclusive destination for honeymooners, lovers, and even friends looking for a secluded getaway; Coco Plum also offers its couples the opportunity to get married on local soil.

16 Acre Belize Private Island

Whether the couple comes alone or does an entire private island rental to share with friends or family, our weddings are a spectacular display of artistry and love. Leave all the planning to a wedding planner, who coordinates the day, leaving all the days leading up to the ceremony to the enjoyment of the lovebirds.

Our lovely couple and their family surely did enjoy each day leading up to their ceremony as they relished in our local creations of our skilled bartenders and chefs. Between swimming, paddle boarding, a little karaoke and diving there was still just enough to time to lay back in a beach chair to enjoy our famous Mosquito Bites.

The wedding day quickly draws near, and the anticipation builds. The island grounds men have been working arduously to prepare the spots for the ceremony, cocktail and reception area. The wedding planner makes all the final touches – floating candles, tiki torches, a lit pathway to the ceremonial spot, floral centerpieces, and of course putting the champagne on ice – as the bride and groom each get ready in their cabanas.

The ceremony begins and then ends ends just with the sun fading away in the background. A toast is made as the crowd cheers to the union: fireworks complete this breathtaking scene.

At twilight, the cocktail is held and the toasts continue. The groom plays a surprise video for his bride – a video declaring his love and dedication and appreciation of her.

The unwavering kitchen staff continues to produce one wonderful course after another for the reception buffet. By the last tray of food, a line has formed and the party sits down to enjoy their meal. The band plays light music during this time, but are steadily preparing for the party that will occur soon after. Shoes come off, skirts get hiked up a little and the dancing in the sand begins and continues thru the night.

Belize Lobster Festival

Coco Plum’s First Annual Lobster Festival!

Kick off Summer with an island celebration of the opening of lobster season in Belize!

With the days getting longer and our tans getting darker, summer is definitely around the corner; that means that a large number of beach activities and beach parties are on the horizon! A typical Belizean summer entails various agricultural fests, as a whole array of foods “come in to season.” As agricultural products are produced by the season, the tropical climate of a Belizean Summer welcomes mangoes, cashews, and lobsters by throwing large festivals – or “fests.” Get ready to experience all the savory, fresh flavor that Belize has to offer!

Lobster Ceviche at Belize Lobster Festival

Lobster Ceviche

The Lobster Fest is the most popular, as it is held multiple times in various locations, including San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia. Traditionally, fishing for lobster has been a source of revenue for many local residents; now, we are happy to share the culture surrounding lobster with visitors to Belize! These events – with their discounted drinks, wide array of creative lobster dishes, free concerts and fun competitions – draw quite the crowd, from locals to tourists alike. Hotels in these locations are fully booked just weeks before the event, as everyone wants to ensure that they can be a part of the lobster frenzy.

Guests of Coco Plum are in luck as we are offering our first private island version of the Belize Lobster Fest experience! Look out for music, games and of course tasty lobster delicacies. Be prepared to devour lobster anyway you like: grilled, fried, boiled, or even in a delicious ceviche. Enjoy all that Lobster Fest has to offer without the huge crowds, while enjoying the unlimited local drinks included in each of our All Inclusive packages.

Lobster Fritters at Belize Lobster Festival

The festivities begin June 29, 2016 and will continue every Wednesday until July 20, 2016. Stay tuned as we cannot wait to show you the surprises of our first Coco Plum Lobster Fest!

Birding in Belize: Top 5 Most Iconic Birds of Belize

Belize is a haven for over 500 species of birds, making it the ideal getaway for bird watchers and nature lovers alike. Whether you are an expert birder or simply enjoy the beauty of birds, Belize surely won’t disappoint with our wide array of tropical birds, both in the jungle and on the sea. Our Belize private island makes for the perfect spot to observe birds in nature.

Man-O-War Caye in Belize perfect for birders

Guest Photo by TripAdvisor user, “My Superbia.” A beautiful tour of Man-O-War Caye.

Coco Plum Island Resort is located directly across from the Man-O-War Caye, also known as “Bird Caye.” What might seem like an abandoned mangrove island from afar, is actually government designated and monitored bird sanctuary. If you take a closer look you’ll see hundreds of birds wistfully circling the island and eventually coming to a rest on the mangrove limbs. As part of our all inclusive packages, our ever informative tour guides will be sure to stop and give you a detailed description of Belize’s bird sanctuary, pointing out some iconic birds of Belize on the way to your snorkel trip to the Belize Barrier Reef.

Here are the Top 5 Most Iconic Birds of Belize:

5.) The Brown Pelican. While Pelicans are relatively common in coastal areas, they are truly a treasured staple of Belize. Stop and take a look at their expansive breadth and large throat pouches. If you stay and look for a while you will surely see the pelicans unique diving ability – some dive from heights as far as 60 feet!

4.) The Booby Birds: Belize is home to the red-footed, blue-footed, and masked booby birds. On Man-O-War Caye you will see many of these red-footed boobies, which are actually the smallest of all the booby species. While the red webbed feet of the boobies are the first thing that catches your eye, it is their skilled gliding ability that stands out as they can seemingly walk on top of the water to catch their prey.

3.) Frigate Bird: Also present on Man-O-War Caye, is the frigate bird that one can see nesting and mating. The booby birds and frigate birds have a unique relationship. Unlike the booby birds, frigate birds do not have webbed feet nor are they able to dive for their food. Thus, the frigate birds can frequently be seen snatching food from the booby birds. During mating season, the male frigate bird throat becomes inflated to catch the attention of the females … what a show off!

2.) Scarlet Macaw: The Scarlet Macaw is the largest, and by Belizean standards, the most beautiful of all the parrot species. These majestic birds can be found along the upper Macal River in the Chiquibil National Park, and can fly at a whopping speed of 35 miles per hour.

1.) Toucan: And the number one most iconic bird of Belize, also known as the national bird of Belize, the Toucan. Commonly known as bill bird, the keel-billed toucan is a national jewel. It is known for its very sociable behavior and can be found throughout the forests of Belize, nesting in the holes of various tree trunks.

Recipe for FUN All Inclusive Drinks at Coco Plum Private Island!

Chances are if you and your significant other have been reading about Coco Plum, you’ve heard of some of our amazing bartenders and their tropical concoctions. And for those of you who are more experienced Coco Bummers, you know what its like to be CRAVING an exotic local drink! Today we’d like to share our recipe for the infamous “mosquito bite.”

Our bartender serving two Belize All Inclusive Tropical Drinks

Swervin’ Ervin and Coco Plum’s infamous mosquito bite

On arrival at Coco Plum, you will be welcomed with the first of many tropical drinks – the mosquito bite. After your voyage to Belize nothing beats the savory taste of a cold, tropical drink decorated with an umbrella and lime. For some of you this might become your favorite drink throughout your stay and luckily, the mosquito bite is included as part of our all inclusive packages. Most drinks that are made with local rum are included in the all inclusive packages (list of drinks not included here). Check out the recipe below so you can try it yourself!

Ingredients:

Grenadine

Brandy (1-2 ounces)

Mango Squash mix (can substitute for tropical juice mix)

Coconut Rum (2 ounces)

Follow these Steps:

Steps to making you own Belize All Inclusive Drink

Steps for making your very own mosquito bite

  1. Line the bottom of your glass with grenadine & add plenty of ice
  2. Pour coconut rum
  3. Meanwhile, blend brandy and mango squash to get a smoothie-like consistency
  4. Pour the blended drink into your glass
  5. ENJOY!!!

Although you may not be able to enjoy a mosquito bite amidst the sandy shores of Coco Plum at the moment, we hope this recipe inspires you to take a trip soon and taste it for yourself. Feel free to share your experiences making the mosquito bite at home and add any helpful hints! What else were some of your favorite drinks at Coco Plum?

Caribbean Regards,
